Chess (Grades K-8)
Bethesda Campus

Sidwell Summer is excited to offer two chess programs: A Beginner class (Grades K-5) and an Intermediate level class (Grades 2-8). Chess has been played for over 1,500 years by both kings and commoners of all ages. Chess is a fun way to keep your campers mentally sharp during the summer through memory building, concentration and reasoning skills. No matter your camper’s skill level, these enriching programs will teach campers the fundamentals and strategies of chess through games, puzzles and actual chess matches!

Beginner Session (1PM-4PM): Open to campers in grades K-5 with less than two years experience or no experience at all. Let curious minds meet the challenging world of the chess board through stories, puzzles, arts, and games to excite and delight future grandmasters. Students will learn all about the chess pieces and chess board at a gentle pace, adding details bit by bit as they accumulate all the knowledge necessary to play a full game of chess.

Intermediate Session (9AM-12PM): Open to campers in grades 2-8 with 2+ years of experience. This class will challenge students to level up their chess thinking with advanced strategies pertaining to the opening, middle game, and end. Students will participate in an in camp tournament, team up for a bughouse challenge, and even invent their own variant chess games. Students can expect to leave class with a richer understanding of a very complex game, and ready to take on all challengers.
