How could a monkey tell you it’s hungry without talking? How would a witch’s voice change when casting different spells? What would happen if Batman and the Joker went to a birthday party together? In theater camp, you will ask and answer all these questions and more! Sidwell Friends’ Lower School Assistant Librarian, Kayleigh Gallagher, a graduate of University of Maryland School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies with nearly fifteen years of theater experience, will lead campers on a weeklong adventure where they will unlock, explore, and develop their own theatrical skills. Guided by each week’s character theme, campers will learn basic acting skills through voice and movement work, partner scenes, and even prop and costume design!

Theater Camp is designed to introduce young children to the world of theater and performing arts.  Here are some key aspects of Sidwell Summer Theater camp:

  1. Introduction to Acting: Campers are introduced to fundamental acting techniques, such as voice, movement, and communication. Campers will develop these foundational skills through a weeklong character study centered around that week’s theme. Activities may include improvisation games, creating partner scenes, and acting exercises.

  2. Creative Expression: Children are encouraged to express themselves creatively through various activities, including storytelling, role-playing, and visual design. This helps them build confidence and discover their own unique talents.

  3. Teamwork: Theater is a collaborative art form, and camps often emphasize the importance of teamwork. Campers may work together in group exercises and partner scenes, fostering cooperation and communication skills.

  4. Fun and Play: While learning is a key component, Theater Camp is designed to be enjoyable. Activities often include theater games, arts and crafts, and other recreational activities to ensure that children have a positive and memorable experience.

The goal of a theater camp for kids is to nurture a love for the performing arts, foster creativity, and build essential life skills such as teamwork and self-confidence. Through encouragement and instruction, campers will develop their skills in a supportive environment. Theater Camp is a great way to introduce young minds to the world of theater and foster a lifelong appreciation for the arts!
